Posted by admin | Under Golf Swing Instruction Thursday Oct 30, 2008Hey gang. Any golfers out there have golf swing e-books that they'd like to recommend? I'm just getting started and can't really afford professional lessons or coaching so I'm looking for some good instructional ebooks, preferably ones with clear instructions and lots of photos, etc. Many thanks for your help.
I'd pretty highly recommend The Simple Golf Swing (with a nice review of it located here: http://www.usfreeads.com/741561-cls.html )
Golf swing guides are a dime a dozen but The Simple Golf Swing is one of the better written ones, and, most importantly, has tons of illustrations and photos to back up the sound advice.

Is a golf swing for iron shots different in mechanics than a swing for a driver/wood?
Posted by admin | Under Driver Golf Swing Monday Oct 27, 2008
The fundamental mechanics of the swing don't change, but the position of the ball at address does. With irons you want to make a descending blow, hitting the ball first then taking a divot. With fairway woods the ball would be positioned forward in your stance so that you just sweep it off the ground, and with the driver positioned even further forward so you catch it a little on the upswing.
How can I get the slice out of my golf swing?/What causes it?
Posted by admin | Under Golf Swing Slice Monday Oct 27, 2008Only when using my driver, the ball slices away drastically. I am an intermediate golfer, and would really like to know how to straighten out my drive.
What happens on a slice is that at impact your clubhead or face is open, i.e., facing slightly to the right of the target. And it doesn't take much. Of course, I'm assuming that you are right-handed. You've got to square up that clubhead at impact in order to avoid slicing the golf ball, which, by the way, is very common with the driver. This is why you'll often see pro's using a 3-wood or long iron when they want to play it safe off the tee.
So, how do we sqare up that clubface at impact? The simplest thing I can suggest is for you to use a "stronger" grip. Now don't misunderstand me. I'm definately not telling you to sqeeze the club any tighter. This would actually slow down your clubhead speed and you'd end up losing distance. What I mean by utilizing a "stronger" grip is to simply slide or turn both hands slightly to the right on the grip. Not much, just a little. You'll have to experiment with this, but I think you'll find that you do get results. Don't become obsessed with where the "V's" are pointing.
Along with this, let me give you a drill to work on on the practice tee. You might want to start with your 3-wood or even say a 5 or 6 iron and progress up to the driver. I want you to take say, just a half swing and really work on releasing your wrists at impact, letting them roll-over or pronate after impact and into the follow through. Try saying a key swing thought like "release," as you make contact with the ball. The key is, you've got to get those wrists through the golf shot in order to square that clubhead up to the target line. Good luck my friend.

What I mean by that is….play your game, don't try to do too much.

Loss of power in the golf swing….??
Posted by admin | Under Power Golf Swing Monday Oct 27, 2008OK this is a complicated one. I am going to get back into playing a lot again this summer so I want to get my power back. I won my club championship 2 years ago, but have been significantly shorter with all my clubs for about 4 years now. My swing started to get too long and I've fixed that for the most part, but along with that it got too up right causing me to flip my hands through the ball, as opposed to rolling them through impact and keeping my hands ahead of the clubface. Thus I don't compress the ball like I used to and have lost about 10 yards on my irons and quite a bit off the driver. I hit a high ball, but I can play quite well with it, I just want my distance back. Any tips to get my swing more shallow and to compress that ball???
If you are going to "get back into playing a lot again this summer" I'll assume you haven't been playing as much recently, right? I'm thinking that just playing more will bring back some yardage.
You also mentioned that you won the "club championship 2 years ago" but you "have been significantly shorter with all my clubs for about 4 years now." Maybe being shorter is a good thing. Did you win any championships over four years ago when you were longer?
When playing golf we do some peculiar things. The main thing better players do is learn is how to score. Scoring comes from putting the ball in good positions to attack pins. However, players that hit it full bore on most shots have to contend with issues of poor accuracy. Even Tiger Woods has learned to back off a little.
I believe that once you start playing (read: practicing) more, then your crisp ball striking will come back. With it will come some (or all) of your lost yardage.
Now, concerning shallowing out your swing…
Ben Hogan states on page 79 of "Five Fundamentals…" the following: "HOWEVER, YOU ARE HEADING FOR DISASTER IF YOU THRUST YOUR ARMS UP ABOVE THE PLANE SO THAT THEY WOULD SHATTER THE PLANE OF GLASS. Poor golfers [I'm not saying you're a poor golfer...poor golfers don't win club championships] make this error at any and all stages of the backswing, but it occurs most commonly when they are nearing the top of the backswing. Then, when their hands are about shoulder high, they suddenly lift their arms almost vertically towards the sky–crash goes the glass… and their shot. They conclude the backswing on an entirely different and far more upright plane, …."
When you start trying to get a little of that lost yardage back, you probably try to get a little more backswing. In doing so I would wagger a small bet that you are lifting your hands towards the end of your backswing instead of continuing AROUND in your backswing. Doing so will cause several bad things to happen. The first thing to go will be accuracy. If you played a slight draw before, then the draw will now be more pronounced. To straighten out the shot, you start blocking the shot by hanging on or you weaken your grip. An overly weak grip then causes you to flip at it to square it up. By this time the whole swing has fallen apart. You lost your fundamentals.
Assuming your fundamentals were sound in the past, your fix is probably very simple and very slight. Don't go making any sort of major overhauls. Concentrate on the last part of your backswing. Do not let your hands shoot up towards the sky at the very end. You will need to feel your flaw before you can fix it. Swing very slowly and concentrate on the end of your backswing (the part leading up to the transition from back to forward). This is where you've gone wrong.
Once you get your swing back on plane, then your ballstriking will return. When you are on plane you don't have to make any compensations. You just drive through the ball without fear of it turning left (for a right-handed golfer).
One other note… Driver and ball technology has improved in the last few years. You might consider looking into the latest drivers and balls. Your friends can buy an extra ten yards even with their swings. Why not get a little yourself? But first work out the flaw you developed by not playing lately.
Go practice.
Finding Super Golf Swing Tips That Work
Posted by admin | Under Golf Swing Plane Sunday Oct 26, 2008
Yes it’s hard to believe but there are more than 27 million golfers in the world today. It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball. Many golfers play golf just to hack around and have some fun; more avid players are always looking for ways to improve their golf swing and their overall game.
It’s been proven that thinking positively about bettering your golf game will benefit you more than playing to compete with your partners and trying to win for winnings sake. Visualize where you would like the ball to land, as you swing. Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence.
Swing slowly and steadily using a nice rhythm. Trust your golf club to do the job it was intended to do. Accomplished golfers purposely use sidespin to steer their ball around obstacles or towards the safe side of fairways and greens. When you swing if you have problems with your left knee buckling, imagine you’re holding a soccer ball between your knees.
The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player’s body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists. As the body matures, the ability to rotate the upper torso is affected by age, and the hand action can also slow down requiring a slightly stronger grip.
Sidespin occurs when the clubface is not aligned perpendicularly to the plane of swing. Use the basic ‘hitchhiker’ position when you’re working on your backswing. Before you swing, make sure you’re relaxed; contract all your muscles tightly for a moment and then relax them.
Make sure to use the proper technique. At the end of a swing, the weight has shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body is fully turned to the left and the hands are above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the players’ back.
Once you understand that you can change your swing by using a simple technique, you’ll never underestimate golf fitness again. You can get rid of shoulder problems with some simple techniques. It’s no secret; most of the professional players actively participate in workouts.
Ask an expert, who is not associated with the shop you would buy your golf swing aid from, for advice on the right aid for you. Most of all don’t waste your money on a golf swing aid you don’t need or will never use. Be careful about the claims on TV commercials and magazine ads; seek expert advice before you buy because they may not live up to their claims.
Golf swing aids can be found online and are often cheaper. If you’re looking for an aid to improve your stance they’re not hard to find. There are a wide range of golf swing aids on the market today to help the beginning and advanced golfer.
Keep in mind that with some golf swing aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert. Overall, investing in golf swing aids will greatly improve your golf swing and your golf game. Golf swing aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing.
Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting out, pick just one golf swing aid and go to work on your swing. You can find golf swing aids that will help you with your wrist and arm position.
Get some golf DVDs and commit yourself to a time to practice what you learn. Take as many private lessons as you can afford with a good golf pro. Golfers can never get enough golf tips.
How To Use Golf Training Aids To Improve Your Swing
Posted by admin | Under Golf Swing Path Sunday Oct 26, 2008
Looking for better consistency? Need to improve your accuracy? Desperately want some more yards? Or possibly you just want your swing to look a little better so your buddies won’t tease you anymore. These are all great reasons for doing some work on your swing, but what is the best way to go about it?
There are so many factors of the golf swing that it can be intimidating just figuring out what to do first: grip, stance, alignment, takeaway, swing path, shoulder turn, wrist cock, tempo, timing, weight shift, etc. It’s impossible to work on everything at once unless you enjoy tangling yourself into a pretzel. Here are some tips on how to find where to start, and on how to use golf training aids to help you improve your swing.
1. Learn! Get at least one book and one video about the golf swing and learn the basic concepts before you start tinkering. This can really save you some time and heartache. Learn about grip, stance, and alignment. Learn about swing path and clubface angle and how the two combine to affect the flight of the ball. There are lots of great golf videos and books out there written by guys who have spent their lives figuring out the best way(s) to swing, so take advantage!
2. Get lessons from a PGA pro! At the very least, take three lessons to check your grip, stance, and alignment before you start working on your full swing. Swing work is worthless unless you start from the right position, and you can get good instruction about the alignment basics almost anywhere.
3. Get some golf training aids! Golf training aids can really help you get results faster if you use them consistently. Here are some suggestions for golf training aids that will get you going quickly:
a) Molded grip. These are invaluable for learning how to grip it before you rip it. Make sure you get a grip/club combination that allows you to actually hit balls, because this is the fastest way to get used to the new position.
b) Swing Path. The club should approach the ball on a slightly inside out path for optimum distance. Get a swing path training aid to help with this. They can range from a foam barrier that physically prevents you from coming over the top, to a mat that sits on the ground as a visual aid.
c) Swing plane. Swinging the club on plane for the entire swing can help with your consistency. A variety of training aids exists from laser pointers for a visual aid to a large hoop that forces you to stay on plane.
d) Tempo. Get a golf metronome and use it during practice sessions. This will help you groove your swing rhythm and gain consistency.
e) Release. Your wrists must release properly through impact to get good club head speed and clubface angle. Get a release training aid to help with this.
f) Weight shift. You absolutely must shift your weight onto your right foot in your backswing and then back to your left foot as you swing through (for right handers). Many players have a problem with falling back as they swing through, which can cause a nasty slice and too high ball flight. Get a golf training aid that forces you to shift the weight onto your forward foot as you swing through the ball and you will gain distance and directional consistency.
If you follow all these suggestions, you will see results quickly. Good luck and stay focused on your swing goals!
Better Golf Swing, Learn How to Do It!
Posted by admin | Under Golf Swing Mechanics Sunday Oct 26, 2008
As a seasoned veteran golfer should already know, the key to a good game of low scoring golf is the swing. As a beginner, the first thing you need to learn is that a better golf swing will eventually make you a better golfer.
As a beginner, the mechanics of the golf swing should be the first thing you should learn but it should be the last thing you’re thinking about while on the golf course. What is meant by that is that a golfer needs to know that the golf swing or golf swing thoughts should be used primarily for the purpose of learning a new motion until it is developed into unconscious thought (you swing from memory not thought).
This conscious thought of a better golf swing should only take place while on the range or when swinging around the house for practice, not while playing a game. When you’re on the range to play a game, the only thing you should be thinking about is where you want the ball to land.
Techniques
Pick a spot out on the course preferably the green of the fairway where you want to try and get the ball to land and concentrate on hitting the ball to that spot; don’t concentrate on how you’re going to swing the club. Using this thought on the ball also forces you to think ahead or think of something else other than your swing.
This sounds a lot easier than what it actually is and anyone who has tried not to think about their swing while swinging will testify to the difficulties your going to have while trying to train your mind as well as your swing.
In fact very few golfers are able to keep their minds off their swing, they are continually thinking while swinging how to get a better golf swing. In other words they are trying to hard, relax and concentrate on the ball and where your target is for the ball.
This new way of target golfing may take some time to get used to, so go out and practice this new way of golfing for a month or so preferably on the practice tee before you pass judgment on this technique give it some time and you will see that you will soon have a better golf swing where it counts, on the course.
How to improve consistent Swing in Golf?
Posted by admin | Under Improve Golf Swing Friday Oct 24, 2008How to improve consistent swing in golf to aim to a target always?
Golf Swing Mechanics
Golf swing mechanics is probably the easier of the two areas to understand. It is the reason we take golf lessons and practice at the range.
Beginning at address, moving through all the stages of the golf swing, and finishing with the follow through, the body is required to move through a specific sequence of movements to perform the golf swing correctly. If the body does not move through this sequence properly then the result will be a poor, inefficient and awkward looking swing. Over time, a poor swing results in poor consistency (every once in awhile you hit a good shot regardless of your swing, that's what keeps us coming back for more). An easy example of this is when you "come over the top" with the club, which usually usually results in a slice.
In addition to the body performing an intricate number of biomechanical movements in the golf swing, timing of these movements is critical for you to hit the ball successfully. Each and every biomechanical movement within the golf swing has a certain sequence and timing. If they are not performed in the correct order or timing, then the golf swing will not be efficient. Poor timing results in those wonderful slices, snap hooks, chili dips and topping the ball that we know all too well.
Now, how do we improve on the mechanics of the golf swing? I would have to say it is through two things:
1) Proper instruction. Find a good teacher and stick with that teacher. Most of the pros do, why not you?
2) Practice, practice, practice. As they say, "practice makes perfect," and I believe this is true when it comes to the golf swing.
I'm trying to pick of Golf. How to I fix my baseball swing so that I don't slice the ball?
Posted by admin | Under Golf Swing Mechanics Friday Oct 24, 2008I'm been playing baseball since highschool and play pretty frequently now…. but I'm trying to pick up golf. I'm having swinging mechanics issues because I'm using my baseball swing when I'm driving the golf balls and it always ends up with a SEVERE right hand slice… help?!?
lessons are the best idea if you're just learning… they'll get the old habbits out.
If you dont want to spend the money here are a few tips.
Keep the back elbow in and down (close to the body). Put a towel under your arm pit and dont drop it during the swing.
Make sure the head of the club starts on the inside of the ball and go through the ball to the outside (not to much or you will hook the ball).
What I did to fix mine in this is I would put the logo of the ball facing me (close to me) aim at that and when trying to hit that I would try to aim it out to the far right (I am right handed) That is inside to outside swing.
Good luck… get lessons.

Golf Swing Mechanics, Learn the Proper Ones!
Posted by admin | Under Golf Swing Mechanics Wednesday Oct 22, 2008
Every golfer appears ready to do anything to develop more power in his/her golf swing. A common question asked by golfers is: where does that power come from? The answer is simple: golf swing power is the result of three specific factors - golf swing mechanics, golf strength, and golf equipment.
The inclusion of golf swing mechanics in this list of three should not come as a surprise. Nor for that matter the inclusion of golf equipment. But golf strength seems to be the least recognized of the three, though for it is the key to longer drives. Golf strength is defined as how well your body is conditioned to swing a golf club with maximum power.
There is no doubt that quality golf equipment is also capable of making a difference in how far you drive the ball.
While admitting that equipment and technological advances can lengthen the distance of your drives, it should be kept in mind that without better golf swing mechanics and without getting your body in better golf shape, new technology can do little to help your game. A bad swing can only produce a bad result, no matter what kind of new driver you may have just purchased.
Every golfer realizes how important golf swing mechanics are when it comes to driving the ball down the fairway. Good golf swing mechanics are, in fact, essential. If you are over the top with your swing or come inside too much, you are certain to see that dreaded slice or snap hook. The drives will be short, too low, too high, left, right, or any combination of these if you are putting bad swings on the ball.
It is important for a golfer to work constantly on his golf swing mechanics if he/she is keen on improving his/her game. It is because of the vital role of golf swing mechanics that the best golfers in the world have swing coaches working with them on a consistent basis. The golf swing is such a fine, mechanically complex movement that it requires constant work to keep it highly efficient.
Amateurs often make the mistake of ignoring the availability of golf instruction.
They fail to make noticeable improvement in driving primarily because of a lack of instruction, and low levels of golf strength. The absence of instruction leads to the development and ingraining of improper golf swing mechanics. Such improper mechanics lead to slices, hooks, topping the ball, and hitting it fat on the course. Naturally, those types of swings can lead to frustration and bad rounds of golf. Every golfer interested in seriously improving his/her game should find a good instructor of golf swing mechanics and take lessons on a consistent basis.

Your young, keep swinging, strength will develop.
Despite what people say strength does matter in golf.
Big strong guys hit the ball further.
Maybe swing a weighted club, or tape three cubs together.
Get a net and mat, just hit more often.

There is nothing like that. The main idea here is to bring your club back to square when you make contact with the ball. The commonly accepted practice is to keep the club moving in a straight line, on the takeaway, for the first 18 inches from the ball.
