Golf Tips Swing - What Your Golf Pro Doesn’t Know!

Monday Nov 3, 2008

There’s a lot your golf pro didn’t tell you about your game. A lot.

That’s the reason for this blog… to unravel the mysteries of why you have swing faults despite golf lessons, books, and expensive equipment.

The purpose of this blog is NOT to bash golf professionals. Quite the contrary, in fact.

Some of the smartest, highest educated, and most inspirational coaches in the world are in the sport of golf.

Not only that, technology has advanced this game to a new level.

I mean, with computer generated swing analysis software, high speed cameras, and years of working out the bugs, golf has become one of the most advanced sports in the world.

Combine the technology with world class teaching pros, and you have a fantastic opportunity to play better golf now than ever. These guys can be crazy smart.

That said, there are some things most teaching pros just don’t know about how the human machine works. And since golf technology has skyrocketed in the last few decades, how come golfing scores haven’t? Clearly there is a disconnect between technology and bodily function.

Take for example, Bob:

Bob is our average “weekend warrior” golfing enthusiast that fights his fear of slicing the ball on the first tee, and humiliating himself in front of his golfing buddies. Not to mention the foursome behind him.

You see, Bob has been here before. He’s kind of gotten a reputation for the banana ball. In fact, the water cooler talk has given him his very own nickname… “Banana Ball Bob!”

Life can be tough on our hero, Banana Ball Bob. His only solace is he’s been working with a golf pro lately taking lessons to help straighten out his problem of having to replace the glass plane windows in the houses lining the golf course. Now it’s Banana Ball Bob’s turn to hit his first tee shot of the day.

He tries to remember what his golf pro told him during their lessons together: “Take a strong grip… line up correctly… don’t bring the club back inside too quickly… don’t sway… don’t swing from the top… don’t cross the line at the top… start the downswing with the legs… clear the hips… swing inside to out… don’t dip… keep your eye on the ball… transfer your weight… follow through… oh, and one last thing; don’t think about the swing, just let it happen.” Yeah, right.

Well, you guessed it, Bob got to go hunting, fishing, and hiking all on the first hole. Ouch! Bob’s got a problem. It’s a problem he doesn’t know he has, and his golf pro doesn’t know it either.

Bob’s Got a Neck Tightness Problem

You heard me right, a neck problem. Bob can’t rotate his neck like he should. And because he can’t rotate his neck, he slices the ball. Plain and simple. Doubt that? Stay with me (and Bob) and I will show you, and explain to you what your golf pro doesn’t know.

Skill vs. Ability

Look, it’s really simple, there is a difference between your ability to preform a task and the skill necessary to preform that same task.

Here’s what I mean: if Bob can’t rotate his head and neck to 90 degrees both right and left, then he has a lack of ability to rotate his head and neck 90 degrees to the right and to the left.

There could be a few different reasons he can’t rotate his head and neck to 90 degrees, but the fact remains that if his neck is too tight to turn his head 90 degrees, and he can only turn his head to say, 60 degrees, then 60 degrees is his body’s current ability.

This means that he now must develop his skill around his “lack” of ability to rotate his head the normal range of motion.

Bob slices the ball because he can’t keep his head still during the back swing. (Notice: I didn’t say, “Bob slices the ball because he can’t keep his head DOWN during the back swing.”) Keeping your head still, and keeping your head down are two opposite ends of the spectrum.

Still, Bob’s slice is caused by a little know mechanical disruption during his swing that your golf pro doesn’t know about. And there is a causative factor:

Bob’s head (and yours) is half as wide as your hips…almost to the millimeter! It’s universal to everyone baring deformity.

Take a look at this picture and see what I mean:

When your neck is too tight, you will have a tendency to move off of the ball with your head. And this means your head is located outside of the axis of your hips during your backswing.

Take a look at this picture:

Notice the left image.  Notice how his head is outside his left hip axis.

This will almost guarantee a slice, because now, you have to use your upper body to get back into position at impact. Yeah… good luck with that.

When you swing “from the top” you will swing “outside to inside” (meaning your club crosses the target line) and this is how Bob got his nickname.

Bob’s golf pro doesn’t have a clue about Bob’s real problem, and so the golf pro has to create new and inventive ways to get Bob to hit the ball straight.

On the one hand, the golf pro is a genuis if he succeeds at getting Bob to hit the ball straight during his lessons together.

On the other hand, the magic trick quickly gets revealed as “smoke and mirrors” when real life happens on the first tee.

What’s the cure for Bob’s slicing problem? Bob has restore the proper range of motion to his neck.

Assuming that his neck is “normal” and healthy, (no surgeries, whiplash, or other injuries) then Bob needs to work on restoring his neck’s range of motion to 90 degrees so that he can keep his head “still” not “down” during his backswing.

For more adventures on Banana Ball Bob, stay tuned to this blog.

Golf EZ Plane Swing Trainer, Swing Trainig Aids, Golf [ATW-EZPST

$58.04 Click to enlarge Ben Hogan referred to the swing plane as a “three-dimensional road map” for the golf swing. It’s that invisible, imaginary, sloping, circular path that is carved in the air as the best golfers make their swing. Understanding this concept is vital if you want to develop a

Golf Question?

Wednesday Nov 12, 2008

I am a experienced college golfer. My handicap is 7. I currently hit Nike NDS Irons and a Ben Hogan Driver. Whenever I hit these clubs, I pull the ball about 15 yards. Its a little cut but continues to hurt my game. Its not my swing because I know I swing on a even plane.
I believe its the curve on the club. I do not hit Tour Proffessional clubs and I think thats the reason. TP irons and drivers are straight and the reg clubs are curved.
I drive the ball about 285 and my 7 iron I probably hit 165. I am 5-10 175. I swing the club hard. Anyone help me out?

If your swing path is correct ( meaning your divots point in the direction of the target ) than the offset built into your irons may be hurting you. However, have you ever checked the lie angle on these clubs? I rebuilt my swing and kept pulling the ball. Turns out my lie angles needed to be adjusted due to my impact position changing. Get your lie angles checked first. If they are correct I would sumise it is the offset in your clubs.

golf question on iron play?

Wednesday Nov 5, 2008

any pro out there that can give me any suggestion on how to my irons more consistant. i am not happy with my iron shots as i am with my woods. i play to a 10 hdcp. use to be a seven…but i am getting older, 64….it seems to me that in using my woods that i am on plane more and my swing speed is more even through the swing.
i don't know if it is my angle of attack compared to the woods or my aggressness through the swing that is causing me to either push the ball right or smother it left. i hit about 30 balls every day during the golf season, and then pracitice my short game.
any suggestion would be appreciated

You should find little or no difference in the tempo of your swing from your woods to your irons. Your angle of attack will inevitably be different. You must, must, must get rid of any thoughts before or during your swing with your irons that you will hit the ball any less flush than you wish. Your target "strike point" with your irons should be the bottom front of the ball as you look at it. Your divot should always extend a few inches in front of your ball. The only swing thought I've had for the last five or ten years has been arms-legs-legs-arms. This is the sequence of body movement for all full swing golf shots. Arms pull the legs back, legs pull the arms through. I hope this helps.

Fairways and Greens.

Finding Super Golf Swing Tips That Work

Sunday Oct 26, 2008

Yes it’s hard to believe but there are more than 27 million golfers in the world today. It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball. Many golfers play golf just to hack around and have some fun; more avid players are always looking for ways to improve their golf swing and their overall game.

It’s been proven that thinking positively about bettering your golf game will benefit you more than playing to compete with your partners and trying to win for winnings sake. Visualize where you would like the ball to land, as you swing. Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence.

Swing slowly and steadily using a nice rhythm. Trust your golf club to do the job it was intended to do. Accomplished golfers purposely use sidespin to steer their ball around obstacles or towards the safe side of fairways and greens. When you swing if you have problems with your left knee buckling, imagine you’re holding a soccer ball between your knees.

The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player’s body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists. As the body matures, the ability to rotate the upper torso is affected by age, and the hand action can also slow down requiring a slightly stronger grip.

Sidespin occurs when the clubface is not aligned perpendicularly to the plane of swing. Use the basic ‘hitchhiker’ position when you’re working on your backswing. Before you swing, make sure you’re relaxed; contract all your muscles tightly for a moment and then relax them.

Make sure to use the proper technique. At the end of a swing, the weight has shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body is fully turned to the left and the hands are above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the players’ back.

Once you understand that you can change your swing by using a simple technique, you’ll never underestimate golf fitness again. You can get rid of shoulder problems with some simple techniques. It’s no secret; most of the professional players actively participate in workouts.

Ask an expert, who is not associated with the shop you would buy your golf swing aid from, for advice on the right aid for you. Most of all don’t waste your money on a golf swing aid you don’t need or will never use. Be careful about the claims on TV commercials and magazine ads; seek expert advice before you buy because they may not live up to their claims.

Golf swing aids can be found online and are often cheaper. If you’re looking for an aid to improve your stance they’re not hard to find. There are a wide range of golf swing aids on the market today to help the beginning and advanced golfer.

Keep in mind that with some golf swing aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert. Overall, investing in golf swing aids will greatly improve your golf swing and your golf game. Golf swing aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing.

Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting out, pick just one golf swing aid and go to work on your swing. You can find golf swing aids that will help you with your wrist and arm position.

Get some golf DVDs and commit yourself to a time to practice what you learn. Take as many private lessons as you can afford with a good golf pro. Golfers can never get enough golf tips.

Golf Swing Aids - Helpful even if you’re a Pro

Monday Oct 20, 2008

Many golfers practice a great deal, and still never achieve the swing that they want to possess. If this sounds like you, you may benefit from golf swing aids. There are many golf swing aids on the market today that will help you greatly improve your swing - in less time in most cases. Choosing the gold swing aids that are right for you, however, often presents a challenge.

One of the most popular golf swing aids in existence today is the launch monitor. These are showing up in more and more pro shops across the country and in other countries as well. These takes data from your golf swing to determine what club or clubs are best for you at certain distances, and even tell you how much spin you are putting on the ball. Personal renditions of these launch monitors are also available, and experts agree that the personal monitors are just as powerful as the more expensive ones used in the pro shops - but golfers need to learn how to operate them properly for best results.

Another useful golf swing aid is the golf swing speed monitor. This little box sits on the ground directly across from you, with the ball in the middle. It should sit about six to eight inches away from the ball. It measures the speed of your swing. Increasing swing speed is vital if you want to improve your long game, and this little gadget can help you do just that, by telling you whether your swing speed exercises are doing any good. Training clubs, which are much heavier than your regular clubs, are also good for swing speed increases. They also help build strength and range of motion.

Golf training clubs and elbow braces are also great aids. These help to train you not to break your wrists when swinging, and to keep your form with your elbows during the swing as well. There are also lots of different training clubs available to help with specific problems, such as slices, and plane devices designed to help you improve your swing plane. There are even mats that are designed to help you line up your shot for an improved game! If you can imagine it, it exists!

There are swing aids available for any swing problem that you can imagine. But do they all work? Well, some work for some people, others work for other people, and some don’t work for any people at all. Before rushing out to buy brand new training equipment, slow down and do your research. Talk to other golfers to find out what training equipment they have used, and what results they had with that equipment. Look for used equipment, and if it is reasonable, buy it and give it a try. You should also consider going in with some friends to purchase some training equipment that can be shared by a group.

Training aids are easy to find - both online and offline - but again, not all training equipment is right for you. Talk to a golf pro to find out what equipment you should consider, based on your skill level, and the specific problems you are having. Be careful - if the golf pro you are talking to owns the shop you are standing in - he is a salesman first, and a golf pro trying to help you improve your game second! Talk to other golfers before making a high ticket purchase!

The best information on the training equipment that is available will be found in online forums where golfers hang out - and on the course where golfers also hang out. You can look for customer reviews, but they may not be accurate - or even real. Talk to the real golfers who have really used the products to find out which golf swing aids are most likely to help you. Most golfers are very happy to help each other out with tips and advice - you just have to be willing to take it! Some golfers are a bit more stubborn and a bit more traditional - they don’t want to allow technology to enter into the game of golf. Most of the golf swing aids you will find do represent technology - but if this doesn’t bother you, you should definitely take advantage of what’s out there!

Golf Swing New Four Magic Moves - Dave Larsen from Wisconsin

Saturday Apr 5, 2008

Dave Larsen from Wisconsin describes how The New Four Magic Moves at http://www.GolfSwingSecretsRevealed.com has transformed his game.

He downloaded The New Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf book 5 months ago and having read it he went straight to the golf range and his words: it changed his life, it's absolutely amazing!

The key point to Dave is really keeping his right elbow in to the side of his body during his swing and ensuring he doesn't come over the top. In addition these four proven secrets make it virtually impossible to slice the ball.

Dave has now increased his drives by about 50 yards and thus he finds himself hitting the ball 260 - 280 yards dead straight down the middle. His friends can't believe how well his game has improved!

In the past Dave used to swing with his arms and now he hits with his shoulders and hips, making big turns with both.

He still can't believe how well he is now playing with rounds around the 74 - 76 mark, far better than the 81s he used to shoot a few …
